The Maritime Archaeological Society (MAS) hosts the UNESCO NGO program “Baltic Sea 3D Wreck Ontology”. The program aims at a Baltic Sea wide and interlinked wrecksite ontology, which would enable quantitative research on shipwreck typologies of various historical periods and wrecksite locations. The program does not advocate yet another monolithic database, but instead a ditributed model, in which the various local databases would be compatible with a common datamodel and share the same typologies, as well as methodologies for defining them. All deliverables and resulting information would be published online according to Open Science and Open Data principles.
