Elena Flavia Castagnino Berlinghieri

Underwater Archaeologist

Elena Flavia Castagnino Berlinghieri received her PhD from Bristol University (UK) under the supervision of Prof. A.J. Parker. She is a specialist in Archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean, maritime archaeology, cultural heritage and the study of material culture related to human interaction with the sea. Special attention is also paid to the protection and promotion of cultural heritage and UCH 2001 UNESCO Convention. Elena Flavia’s research has involved the development of interdisciplinary methods for the study of maritime archaeology. She has been awarded research grants and fellowships from various bodies, including the Honor Frost Foundation and the British Academy of London. Since 2005 she serves as Executive Officer Archaeologist for the Valorization of the Archaeological Heritage Unit, at the Soprintendenza ai Beni Culturali of Siracusa (Italy). Elena Flavia is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European University Center for Cultural Heritage (CUEBC) of Ravello, where she has been appointed as expert in “Cultural Heritage and Maritime Archaeology” also acting within the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology. She has taught at several colleges and universities in Italy and abroad. She is author of many publications edited by international bodies.
