| Project Description |
MaritimEA is undertaking the Pakistan Shipwreck Archive Project to develop an archive of known historical shipwrecks in Pakistani waters. A first step towards building this archive is the "Wrecks and Records: Building Pakistan's Maritime Past" initiative, bringing together International researchers to investigate existing archives about historical shipwrecks along Pakistan’s coastline. The initiative is being undertaken in partnership with the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS), is supported by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, and follows another recently announced collaboration between the organisations to provide capacity building workshops in the UK and Pakistan.
The project seeks to address a critical gap in maritime archaeology in Pakistan, where despite a rich seafaring history, underwater cultural heritage remains understudied. By cross-referencing Lloyd’s Register archives with regional records, such as the Sindh and Bombay Gazettes, and a range of UK based India Office Records, the team will seek to create the first comprehensive reference database of wrecks in Pakistani waters from the 19th and early 20th centuries. |
