Project location: United Kingdom
As part of our 2026 investigation season, the Nautical Archaeology Society will deliver a live-streamed exploration of the Klein Hollandia, a Dutch shipwreck in English waters with exceptional international significance. Carrying Italian marble and featuring visually striking bronze cannon on the seabed, the wreck illustrates early-modern maritime trade, conflict, and cultural exchange. Captured by the English in March 1672, the loss of the vessel likely contributed to the outbreak of the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The project demonstrates best practice under the 2001 Convention, combining citizen scientists with government and professional archaeologists. In case of technical difficulties, or bad weather and thereby ensuring that the event can still take place, a pre-recorded broadcast would be premiered on the first International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage.
